Things To Do

Shimla, often called the “Queen of Hills,” is not just a hill station but a living reminder of India’s colonial past, natural charm, and vibrant culture. Established as the summer capital of British India in 1864, Shimla still retains its old-world charm with Victorian architecture, pine-covered hills, and bustling markets. Whether you’re a history lover, adventure seeker, or someone looking for peace in nature, Shimla offers something for everyone. Here are the top things to do:

  • 1. Stroll Along The Ridge & Mall Road. The Ridge is the heart of Shimla, known for its breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains and colonial buildings like Christ Church. Right next to it, Mall Road is lined with shops, cafés, and restaurants - perfect for evening walks, shopping souvenirs, and enjoying local delicacies.
  • 2. Visit Jakhoo Temple. Perched on the highest peak of Shimla, Jakhoo Temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman. Legend says Hanuman rested here while searching for the Sanjeevani herb. The 108-feet tall Hanuman statue and panoramic views of the town make this a must-visit.
  • 3. Experience Kufri’s Adventure. Just 16 km from Shimla, Kufri is famous for skiing, horse riding, and snow adventures in winter. Once a part of the Himalayan Kingdom of Nepal, Kufri today is a paradise for adventure lovers and families alike.
  • 4. Explore Viceregal Lodge (Rashtrapati Niwas). Built in 1888, this grand building was the official residence of the Viceroy of India. Surrounded by cedar forests, it is a stunning piece of British architecture and an important site where decisions leading to India’s partition were made.
  • 5. Relax at Chadwick Falls. Hidden amidst dense forests, Chadwick Falls drops from a height of 100 meters. Monsoon is the best time to visit when the waterfall gushes with full force, making it a serene picnic spot.
  • 6. Take a Ride on the Toy Train (Kalka–Shimla Railway). Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this narrow-gauge railway was built in 1903. The train passes through 103 tunnels and over 800 bridges, offering mesmerizing views of valleys and pine forests.
  • 7. Visit Shimla State Museum. Housed in a colonial mansion, this museum preserves Himachal’s cultural heritage with paintings, sculptures, and historical artifacts, giving travelers a glimpse into the region’s glorious past.

In short: Shimla blends history, culture, and natural beauty in a way that few destinations do. Whether it’s exploring British-era architecture, seeking blessings at temples, or indulging in adventure, Shimla is a destination that turns every moment into a memory.
