Things To Do

Things to Do in Kinnaur–Spiti Valley Circuit

  • Visit Kalpa & Reckong Peo – The Apple Heartland. Kalpa, with its apple orchards and snow-draped views of Kinner Kailash, is one of Kinnaur’s crown jewels. Reckong Peo, the district headquarters, offers a glimpse into local Himachali life and Buddhist culture. Don’t miss the Kinnauri shawls and handicrafts at the local markets.
  • Explore Sangla & Chitkul – The Last Village of India. The Sangla Valley is lush and green, with the Baspa River flowing through cedar forests. Chitkul, the last village on the Indo-Tibet border, is famous for its wooden homes, ancient temples, and the feeling of standing at the edge of India.
  • Discover Nako Village & Lake – A Historic Monastic Hamlet. Nako, perched at 3,600m, is known for its serene lake and 11th-century Buddhist monastery built in the style of Tibet’s famed monasteries. The geography here changes dramatically—from green valleys to stark, high-altitude desert.
  • Tabo Monastery – A Thousand-Year-Old Treasure. Often called the “Ajanta of the Himalayas,” Tabo Monastery dates back to 996 AD. Its murals, frescoes, and ancient scriptures hold immense cultural and historical value, making it one of the oldest continuously functioning Buddhist centers in India.
  • Dhankar Monastery & Village – Guardian of the Valley. Perched precariously on a cliff, Dhankar Monastery offers stunning views where the Spiti and Pin rivers meet. Once the capital of Spiti, Dhankar reflects both Tibetan Buddhist traditions and the harsh geographic challenges of high-altitude life.
  • Kaza – The Cultural Capital of Spiti. Kaza is the biggest town in Spiti and a hub for travelers. Explore local markets, try Tibetan dishes like thukpa and momos, and interact with warm-hearted locals. It’s also a great base for day trips to nearby villages.
  • Key & Kibber – Monasteries & Wildlife. Key Monastery is Spiti’s largest monastery and a center of Buddhist learning, decorated with murals and thangkas. Kibber Village nearby, once the world’s highest motorable village, is also known for spotting snow leopards in winter.
  • Langza, Hikkim & Komic – Ancient Fossils & High-Altitude Living. Langza is famous for marine fossils that reveal the region’s prehistoric connection to the Tethys Sea. Hikkim has the world’s highest post office, where you can mail postcards from the roof of the world. Komic, one of the world’s highest inhabited villages, houses an ancient monastery.
  • Pin Valley National Park – A Haven of Biodiversity. This cold desert sanctuary is home to ibex, Himalayan wolves, and the elusive snow leopard. Its geography is unique—stark cliffs, narrow gorges, and scattered villages practicing ancient farming methods.
  • Chandratal Lake – The Moon Lake. This glacial lake at 4,300m is one of Himachal’s most breathtaking sights. Surrounded by peaks, its crystal-clear waters change color with the light. Culturally, it’s linked to Himalayan legends and pilgrimages.
